Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

ECCHO-Latino stands for Educadores Comprometidos con la Calidad en el Hogar - Latino (Educators Committed to Quality in Home - Latino). It is a non-profit organization (Inc.) and a community dedicated to addressing the specific needs of home child care educators (Family Child Care - FCC), with a special focus on Spanish speakers in Massachusetts.

The Mission is to promote access to information and educational resources in Spanish for Latino educators in Massachusetts, cultivating a supportive and collaborative community that elevates the educational quality in their programs. The Vision is to be the primary support network for Latino educators in early education, ensuring that all members have access to relevant information, ongoing training, and collaboration opportunities, thereby contributing to the holistic development of children and strengthening communities.

ECCHO-Latino was founded by Paula Andrea Echeverri Durango and Harold A. Blanco. The initiative arose as part of their graduation project in advocacy and leadership through Strategies For Children - Advocacy Network, Cohort 3. The founders were aware of the barriers many Spanish-speaking educators face in accessing relevant information in Spanish. The organization launched on February 1, 2024, starting with just 4 members, and has since experienced remarkable growth, reaching a vibrant community of over 250 dedicated educators in Massachusetts.

ECCHO-Latino is committed to providing educational resources and support through its collaborative platform to enhance the professional development of Spanish-speaking educators. Services include:

  • EEC News and Updates: They share the latest news, regulations, and changes from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), ensuring educators are always up-to-date with policies.
  • Training Opportunities: They announce both free and paid trainings and workshops that enrich members' professional skills. ECCHO-Latino offers its own trainings entirely free of charge as part of the membership value. Topics have included Advocacy 101, Effective Communication, Social-Emotional Learning, Personal Finance, and How to Market Your FCC (Family Child Care).
  • Grants and Resources: They provide information on grant opportunities from state funds or private organizations, helping educators secure the capital they need (e.g., how to apply for the FCC Capital Grant from MassDevelopment & EEC).
  • Individualized Support: They have provided over 100 hours of one-on-one consultation to members who request it, covering needs such as preparation for the first visit from the EEC licensor, handling difficult parent issues, or creating a clear enrollment contract.

The community operates in Spanish and uses the WhatsApp platform as its central hub.

  • Main Announcement Group: Used to keep all members informed with the most important announcements, ensuring vital information reaches those who need it.
  • Active Chat: A safe space that fosters mutual support where members can ask questions, describe situations, and seek help from experienced educators.
  • Specialized Groups: Specialized groups exist for specific topics, such as "Los cursos en inglés" (The English courses) for those seeking resources in a second language, and "The 9:30 Call en Español".

The dedication to providing all information and interaction in their native language, Spanish, achieves a level of comfort and confidence that allows members to express their ideas and ask questions freely.

"The 9:30 Call en español" is a crucial advocacy and resource platform for the Spanish-speaking early childhood education community in Massachusetts. It is an extension of the Strategies for Children advocacy call, created in partnership with ECCHO-Latino. The call meets in Spanish twice a month, usually on the first and third Wednesday at 6:30 PM. It serves as a secure space where Spanish-speaking professionals can access crucial information on policies, resources, and growth opportunities, and is hosted by Harold Blanco and Paula Andrea Echeverri Durango.
